Kathy Deschner Wins Prevention Professional of Excellence Award
Kathy Deschner was presented with a Prevention Professional of Excellence Award at the 2018 Washington Prevention Summit in Yakima on November 6, 2018. Criteria for the award is that the nominee must be a strong prevention advocate, provide leadership, effective service delivery, community involvement in relation to the community coalition’s strategic plan and their commitment to substance abuse prevention.
Kathy’s nomination stated: “With 20 years in the prevention field, Kathy Deschner has made endless contributions to prevention in Clark County and the Prevent Together: Battle Ground Prevention Alliance. Her work includes working with local youth, who are members of the D.R.E.A.M. Team, a youth prevention team who in the past two years contributed over 2000 hours of community service. Kathy has also worked closely with the youth who attend the Rocksolid Community Teen Center.
Driven by family events, she brings compassion, understanding, patience, knowledge and experience to her prevention work. Kathy is continually drawing her community into prevention discussions and is committed to reaching out to schools, community organizations, the City of Battle Ground including the Mayor, Chief of Police and Fire Chief and other local leaders to further the prevention work in Battle Ground. Because of her ability to garner participation from many community groups and organizations, Kathy was able to successfully organize National Night Out for the past three years. In 2018, more than 600 community members attended the National Night Out event with prevention education information and activities for youth and families. Kathy gives so much of her time, talents and resources to her community, she is more than deserving of the 2018 Prevention Award of Excellence in the Prevention Professional Category.”
